Students furnished their own beds, bedding, and furniture. The college closed because of the Civil War. Afterwards, an attempt was made to revive it. Rev. Joseph Calvin was elected president but died early in his administration and the school was closed for good.

Women were finally admitted in 1903 when Truly Hall, a dormitory for females, was constructed. Applications were received from over five hundred women during the first year of coeducational status.
