This makes it difficult to infer whether the supposedly causal relationships specified in the model are in fact causal. One way to address this problem is to focus on those studies which measure behaviour at a different (future) time from the time at which attitudes and other constructs are assessed. Kraus ( 1 995) has conducted a meta-analysis of 88 studies of the relationship between Attitudes and Behaviour 19 attitudes and future measures of behaviour. This analysis makes clear that the relationship between attitudes and future behaviour is substantial enough for it to be meaningful to say that measuring attitudes at time behaviour at time 2.

Secondly, the theory of planned behaviour is in essence a subjective expected utility model (see Chapter 2), based on the assumption that individuals make rational decisions that are founded on beliefs about outcomes, weighted by evaluations of those outcomes. Both intuition and empirical evidence suggest that affect can play an important role in behavioural decisions: the emotions we expect to feel after we have engaged in a behaviour (Richard, van der Plight, & de Vries, 1 995a) and/or the emotions we expect to feel while performing a behaviour (Manstead & Parker, 1 995) may be as important as the more instrumental costs and benefits we expect to accrue as a result of our behaviour.

0 x 7) = 22. 1 . Thus, according to this analysis, the job offer of firm B is more attractive than that of firm A (see also Table 2. 1 ). The axioms of SEU theory are all based on the work of von Neumann and Morgenstern (1 944). Their work was purely mathematical and showed that if a person's choices follow certain rules or axioms, it is possible to derive utilities in such a way that a preference for a specific alternative implies that its expected utility is greater than that of the other alternative(s).
